Trump India Tariff: Former US President Slams India-Russia Ties, Announces 25% Import Duty

New Delhi:
Former US President Donald Trump has hit out at India and Russia, saying both countries can “take their dead economies down together” as he announced a fresh 25% tariff on all Indian imports from August 1.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India — their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world.”

He also took a swipe at former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, saying, “Let’s keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!”

Background: Why Trump’s Angry

Trump’s sharp remarks came after Medvedev warned that Trump’s tough talk could push Russia and the US towards direct conflict. Recently, Trump confirmed a 25% tariff on all goods imported from India, adding an extra penalty after both countries failed to finalise a new trade deal.

Why India’s Trade With Russia Worries the US

India has been one of Russia’s biggest energy buyers in recent years. Before the Ukraine conflict, Russian crude made up less than 2% of India’s imports — now it’s over 40%. India also buys defence equipment and nuclear technology from Russia at cheaper rates, often without strict restrictions.

India’s Response

India’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry said that any trade agreement will prioritise the country’s interests. “The Government attaches the utmost importance to protecting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs, and MSMEs. All steps will be taken to safeguard national interests,” the statement said.

Officials also added that discussions with the US to reach a balanced trade deal are still ongoing.
